The Healthcare Sustainability and Relief Effort is a nonprofit organization incorporated in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on the healthcare community. Federal- and state-level relief options available to small businesses for disasters such as COVID-19 are often limited in funding and more focused on short-term and temporary financial relief as opposed to long-term recovery and sustainability.

HSRE aims to close the gap in disaster recovery assistance by providing long-term support in the community for small healthcare organizations nationwide impacted not only by COVID-19, but also by other regional and national disasters as they happen. The organization will do so by providing guidance by means of consulting services, educational resources, and financial assistance to ensure a strong foundation on which each healthcare organization can regrow and sustain business.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI):

  • 40% of small businesses never reopen after a disaster.

  • 25% of all businesses never reopen after a disaster.

  • In 2019, there were 61 disasters nationwide that caused $24.4 billion in collective damages.

  • Since 1980 there have been 258 disasters that cost the U.S. $1 billion or more for a combined $1.74 trillion.
